IT IS FAMILY INCOME, NOT YOURS ALONE
The commonest mistake is declaring only the applicant's own income. An
income certificate ordinarily certifies the income of the FAMILY — the
applicant together with parents, spouse and dependent members as
defined by the State concerned — from ALL sources: salary, business,
agriculture, rent, interest, pension.
Under-declaring is not a shortcut. Where the certificate is used for a
scholarship, a reservation benefit, a fee concession or a government
scheme, a later verification that finds concealed income can mean the
benefit is withdrawn and recovered, in addition to action for a false
declaration.
VALIDITY IS LIMITED. Most States treat an income certificate as valid
for a period — commonly six months to a year — and many institutions
insist on one issued in the current financial year. Check the validity
before relying on an old certificate for an admission or scheme
deadline, because obtaining a fresh one takes time you may not have.
APPLY EARLY. These are needed at exactly the moments that have fixed
cut-off dates — admissions, scholarship windows, scheme applications —
and the revenue office's own enquiry and field verification take time
regardless of how urgent your deadline is.
MOST STATES NOW ISSUE THESE ONLINE through their e-district portal,
with a digitally signed certificate you can download. That is usually
faster than a counter application, and the certificate is verifiable
by the institution that receives it.
