Identity proof ──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── YOU MUST COMPLAIN TO THE BANK FIRST — THIS IS WHERE COMPLAINTS FAIL The Ombudsman will NOT entertain a complaint that has not first been made to the bank itself. This is the commonest reason a complaint is rejected at the threshold, and people are usually unaware of it. The sequence is fixed: 1. COMPLAIN TO THE BANK in writing and get a complaint reference number. Keep it. Without it you cannot show you did this step. 2. WAIT THIRTY DAYS. You may approach the Ombudsman only if the bank has rejected the complaint, or has not resolved it to your satisfaction, or has not replied at all within thirty days. 3. FILE WITHIN ONE YEAR of the bank's reply — or, where there was no reply, within one year and thirty days of the date you complained to the bank. A complaint outside that period will not be entertained. FILING IS FREE. Complaints can be made online through the RBI's Complaint Management System portal, by post, or by email. There is no fee and you do not need a lawyer. WHAT THE OMBUDSMAN WILL NOT DECIDE: a complaint that is already before a court or tribunal, or one that has been settled there. Choose one forum.
