A COPY OF THE FIR IS YOUR RIGHT, NOT A FAVOUR
The informant or the victim is entitled to a copy of the first information report FREE OF COST, forthwith on registration. You should not be asked to pay for it, and you should not have to explain why you want it.
CHECK ONLINE FIRST. Most State police forces publish FIRs on their websites, and they are generally required to be uploaded within a short period of registration, commonly twenty-four to forty-eight hours. Searching there is faster than attending the police station, and gives you a copy the same day.
Certain categories are deliberately NOT published online: offences against women and children, sexual offences, and matters affecting public order or national security. In those cases a written application is the route, and the accused may need to apply to the Magistrate instead.
IF THE COPY IS REFUSED:
1. Apply in writing, as above, and insist on an acknowledgment with a date on it. 2. Escalate to the Superintendent of Police in writing. 3. File an application before the jurisdictional MAGISTRATE, who can direct that the copy be furnished. 4. An RTI application to the police department is also available, and is often the fastest lever in practice because it carries its own statutory timeline.
IF YOU ARE THE ACCUSED and the FIR is not online, you can apply to the Magistrate for a certified copy. You do not have to wait to be served. Knowing what is actually alleged is the first step in answering it, and it is the point at which anticipatory bail becomes a real option.
ఎఫ్ఐఆర్ కాపీ అభ్యర్థన దరఖాస్తు: ఇది ఏమిటి
An FIR copy request application is a written request to the Station House Officer for a copy of a First Information Report that has already been registered. It records the FIR number and date, your role and your purpose, and asks for the copy free of cost when it is not available online.

- You need the FIR to make an insurance claim for theft, a vehicle accident or loss of property.
- You have been named in an FIR and it is not published on the state police website, so you need to know the allegations before seeking bail or legal advice.
- A bank, passport office, employer or court has asked you to produce a copy of the FIR.

- Your interest in the matter, stating whether you are the complainant, the accused or another person.
- The purpose for which you need the copy, such as an insurance claim or legal advice.
- A request that the copy be supplied, noting that section 173(2) BNSS gives the informant or the victim a free copy, with your identity proof enclosed.
దాన్ని ఎలా పూరించాలి, సంతకం చేయాలి మరియు ఉపయోగించాలి
- First search the state police website using the FIR number, police station and date; most FIRs can be downloaded there.
- If it is not online, fill in your details, the FIR number and date, your role and the purpose in the application.
- Print two copies, sign both, and attach a photocopy of your identity proof.
- Submit it at the police station and get the acknowledgement section filled in with the date and the receiving officer's name, or send it by registered post.

- Copy of identity proof (Aadhaar, voter ID, passport or driving licence)
- Any reference number or receipt given when the FIR was registered
- Authority letter or vakalatnama, if someone is applying on your behalf
దీని వెనుక ఉన్న చట్టం
Under section 173(2) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 (BNSS), the informant or the victim gets a free copy of the FIR as soon as it is recorded. Supreme Court directions require police to upload FIRs online, within 24 hours of registration (extendable to 48 hours for connectivity problems or other unavoidable difficulty, and to at most 72 hours only for connectivity problems), except sensitive cases such as sexual offences, offences under the POCSO Act, offences relating to insurgency or terrorism, and cases involving privacy. An accused can get the FIR online, through the Magistrate, or as part of the police report supplied after cognizance. The Right to Information Act, 2005 provides another route, with a 30 day reply period.
నివారించడానికి సాధారణ తప్పులు
- Going to the station before checking the state police website, where the FIR can often be downloaded at once.
- Getting the FIR number, year or police station wrong, which makes the request impossible to trace.
- Handing over the application without getting a dated acknowledgement, leaving no proof of the request.
ఎఫ్ఐఆర్ కాపీ అభ్యర్థన దరఖాస్తు: తరచుగా అడిగే ప్రశ్నలు
How can I get a copy of an FIR online?
Most state police forces have a citizen portal where you can search or download an FIR using the district, police station, FIR number and year. Under the Supreme Court's directions in Youth Bar Association of India v Union of India (2016), FIRs are to be uploaded within 24 hours of registration, extendable to 48 hours, and to at most 72 hours only for connectivity problems. FIRs in sensitive cases, such as sexual offences, POCSO cases, insurgency or terrorism, or cases involving privacy, are not uploaded, and a copy has to be sought from the police or the court.
Is the FIR copy free?
Yes, for the informant or the victim. Section 173(2) of the BNSS says a copy of the information as recorded must be given to the informant or the victim free of cost, as soon as the FIR is recorded. Other persons usually obtain it from the police website, through the court, or by an RTI application, where the normal RTI fee applies.
Can an accused get a copy of the FIR?
Yes. If the FIR is on the police website, the accused can download it. If it is withheld from the website, the accused can apply to the Magistrate for a certified copy. The accused does not need to wait to be summoned, and knowing the allegations early helps when considering anticipatory bail under section 482 BNSS.
What if the police station refuses to give the FIR copy?
Keep the acknowledged copy of your application, then write to the Superintendent of Police. If that does not work, apply to the jurisdictional Magistrate, who can direct that the copy be furnished. An RTI application can run alongside these steps.
How quickly must the police or the court give an accused a copy of the FIR?
In Youth Bar Association of India v Union of India (2016), the Supreme Court directed that a person who suspects he has been named in an FIR can apply, through a representative, to the police officer or the Superintendent of Police for a certified copy on paying the fee charged by courts for copies, and the copy is to be supplied within 24 hours. Once the FIR has been sent to the Magistrate, a certified copy applied for on behalf of the accused is to be given by that court within two working days. After cognizance on a police report, section 230 of the BNSS requires the Magistrate to give the accused a free copy of the FIR along with the police report.
What can I do if the FIR is not put online because the case is treated as sensitive?
Under the Supreme Court's directions in Youth Bar Association of India v Union of India (2016), the decision not to upload an FIR cannot be taken by an officer below the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police. A person aggrieved can, after disclosing their identity, make a representation to the Superintendent of Police, or the Commissioner in metropolitan cities, where a committee of three officers is to decide it within three days. The accused or their representative can also apply for a certified copy to the court to which the FIR has been sent, and the court is to supply it within three days.
I made my complaint by email or an online portal. When does it count as an FIR?
Section 173(1) of the BNSS allows information about a cognizable offence to be given by electronic communication. Information given this way is taken on record only when the person who gave it signs it within three days. For offences punishable with three years or more but less than seven years, section 173(3) also lets the officer, with the permission of an officer not below the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police, hold a preliminary enquiry within fourteen days before proceeding. Once the information is recorded, section 173(2) entitles the informant or the victim to a copy free of cost.
