Gazette notification for name change
ಸಹ ಕರೆಯಲಾಯಿತು: change of name gazette
Publishing a change of name in the Gazette of India or a State gazette, after an affidavit and newspaper notices, so that the new name is accepted on official documents.
To change your name officially, for example after marriage, divorce or simply by choice, the usual route is an affidavit or deed declaring the change, advertisements in newspapers, and publication in the Gazette. Passport, PAN, Aadhaar and other offices then accept the new name.
Gazette of India or State gazette
The Department of Publication, Government of India, publishes changes of name in Part IV of the Gazette of India, with separate guidelines and forms for adults and minors. Many States publish name changes in their own gazettes. Either may be accepted for most purposes; some offices ask for a particular one.
Usual steps
- Sign an affidavit or a name change deed giving the old and new names and the reason.
- Publish notices in two newspapers (one in English and one in a local language is common).
- Apply to the Gazette with the prescribed form, the affidavit, the newspaper clippings, identity proof and the fee.
- Use the published gazette copy to update each document.
Spelling corrections
For a small spelling correction, many offices accept an affidavit without gazette publication. Check the office's own rules first.
